Big roach are notoriously difficult to find in a large gravel pit, especially in waters where they are scarce anyway, let alone specimen-sized ones. However, not one to shy away from a challenge, Aaron Marguet took on the task of tracking down one of these elusive fish in his local water. His efforts paid off in fine style when he successfully landed a superb 2lb 14oz roach.

"I had a great result at my local gravel pit, when I finally landed one of its large roach that are seldom caught," Aaron told us.

"I have often suspected there’s a small shoal of large ones in the venue, so locating them is incredibly tricky."

“Having selected an area out of the wind, I found a few roach tipping in a back bay and, after climbing a tree, I could make out a handful of large redfins. It’s a very rare sight, so I had to act quickly," he added!

“Using maggots in small PVA bags, it wasn’t long before I had a bite, and the fish put up a spirited fight, and my heart was in my mouth throughout!"

“Once landed, I let it recover in the net, and took a moment to compose myself, it’s an important capture for me as it’s such a hard water."

"Weighing 2lb 14oz in summer, it’s a bit special too, it would be great to see this fish in its top condition, it will be well over 3lb by then!" Aaron concluded.
